Introduction to Linux

Linux is anĀ open-sourceĀ operating system that helps us to perform tasks and run the processes as we do in windows and MAC operating systems.Ā Whereby operating system we mean software which helps to communicate or make the connection between the hardware and the software.

Evolution of Computer

The evolution of the Computer has made a great impact on technology as in the early 40’s the size of computer were as big as the size of a room or a park and we can imagine how difficult it was to manage the system and can’t switch from one place to another. Even during that time, it was also difficult to operate the software also and it was developed only for some specific purpose. It was extremely very costly even the normal user can’t afford to install this into their home.

Evolution of Unix

In the Unix tutorial, we will learn about the concepts of Unix as Unix is also an operating system that is capable of handling multiple activities at the same time. The development of the Unix operating system was started atĀ AT&T Bell Labs by Ken Thompson and Dennis RitchieĀ in 1969. It was easily recyclable and that part of recycling is known as the kernels which generate the new operating system and also new functions that can be workable on other systems.

In the Initial Stage, Unix was only found at a large organizations like government, finance, and university.

Expansion of Unix

Talking about 1980 inside the technical market many companies like HP, IBM, etc have created a Unix. In 1983 Richard Stallman developed the GNU project like Unix operating system which is freely available for the user but unfortunately, the project does not make that much popularity and it failed. Even after this many other operating systems came into existence but they were not so user-friendly and unable to gain popularity.

Evolution of Linux

In 1991, Linus Torvalds normal student at the University of Helsinki, Finland developed the Linux Operating System. Due to his development now we all know him as the Father of the Linux Operating System. When Unix was in the market he approaches to share his idea with the Unix team but the idea was denied by them and later the with the idea of Unix as it was open source he writes his own code and developed the Linux kernel.

While in the starting he started this project for his own use and fun but later this became a large project. He wants to first name this as “Freax” but later it becomes Linux.

Linux Today

Today, Linux is everywhere and we use this in supercomputers, smartphones, desktops, web servers, tablets, laptops, and home appliances like washing machines, DVD players, routers, modems, cars, refrigerators, etc.

Key Points

  • In Linux, the requirements of the resources are very low.
  • It can run on a wide range of hardware.
  • It is supported by the community of the developers.
  • Many developers represent the availability and freedom of expression.
